I've seen nightgaunts in action maybe 8 times, of those 8 times 7 were times when more than one person fought the nightgaunt after it attacked someone.

Of those 7 times, nobody was carried away.

Hypothesis: Ganging up on nightgaunts makes them ineffective in carrying people away.
