Masters have been slaying Centurions for a long time with no overt hostilities between the two Cabals. I have killed plenty of them for various reasons that I won't go into here, all in character though. I tussled with Agorinth, Mator and a few others as a result. My point is, I don't think the current war is the result of one or even two actions, but several actions on both sides.
Does the war make sense? Sure it does, in my opinion. Why should the Tower be exempt from bowing to the will of the Empire? It shouldn't. I am sure that past Emperors had reasons for not warring with the Tower, all of which could be justified. Agorinth has his reasons for a war as well, and I am sure they are good ones. After all, what sort of Emperor would stand by and let Masters slay Centurions and get away with it? On the flip side, as the nameless thief posted below (sort of), if Masters don't want to pay the tolls to the Centurions, and they choose to slay them instead, as long as they have an in character reason for doing it, that is their call. War might be the result, but it is not a guarantee, and they are certainly within their rights to do so.
One last thing, as far as game balance (which is sort of a misnomer, as the game is always striving toward balance, but never quite reaching it) is concerned. Arguably, two of the most powerful Cabals (currently) on the MUD warring with each other has to be good for everyone else. So I say, to Masters and Empire, fight the good fight, play this out, and see how it ends. Be prepared to die (I know I am!) and try to have fun with it. To everyone else, take advantage of this war to kick the hell out all your other enemies, and try to have fun with it as well.
