Well if they're trying to rank in the Lumberyard it's doubtful they know how to even get to the past.

Walk around (a lot) and consider every mob you see. Explore areas you've never been before unless it looks like you couldn't stay alive in it at the level you're at now. Group with people (they'll usually know where some good places are). Also alignment comes into play a lot too. If you're good you don't want to kill other good aligned creatures or you'll get an experience penalty, so try to stay away from mostly good aligned areas.
