If I rolled up an invoker, called him Belgarion, and referred to all magic as "The Will and The Word", and played a picture perfect Belgarion from the Eddings books, would that be appropriate? How about an albino anti-paladin named Elric, who's internally conflicted and constantly discusses matters with Arioch? If you're going to disallow characters from books, then disallow characters from books, no matter how well they're roleplayed. If not, (which, given the fact that one can find a number of NPCs lifted directly from books wandering around - Drizzt, Aragorn, Trollocs, etc. - , is just fine), then the two character concepts I mentioned should be just fine. I don't want to make a value judgement on Pikel's roleplaying ability, but having a consistent policy on this sort of thing would really be helpful.
