You know, I didn't read anything that would make me scoff at him. It seems he's rationalizing his defeat with the fact that next time, when he has backup, he'll slaughter you. Correct me if I'm wrong, but rationalization is a natural human mental defense.. and also, I think he's trying to taunt you. I'm not sure what your extended definition of roleplaying here, but I can imagine some bloke like Gharik in real life, easily.
