Yeager was indeed the first man to break the sound barrier. But it was not in a fighter jet, it was in a rocket powered plane, dropped off the wing of a heavy bomber (the stratofortress, I believe, but I could be wrong about that). The name of his plane was the Bell X-1, and is hanging in the Smithsonian.
