What he does is this:

#alias 1 {#var target Langston}
#alias 2 {#var target Whoever}

And since that would be too much to write during battle you have another alias:

#alias settar {#alias $1 {#var target $$2}}

usage:
settar 1 Langston

etc..

Then during battle you can switch between opponents on 1,2,3,4 and so forth.
