First, I did have two wands of barrier, but seems the tower is cursed...
Second, any tactics involving casting spells on a rager I only do when I'm not alone.
Third, he wasn't thirsting. It was more a contest of patience, he was waiting me at the golem for quite some time, when I decided to hell with waiting he did the same :)

Now, why I was expecting something more of myself is because my last fight was against a felar spear spec, who only took 200 hp of mine away before diying, so I was really surprised with Esach. Even thought he's a rager I was expecting at least even odds... foolishly.
