According to the helpfiles on the spheres, they refer to what "sign" you were born under.. Like your zodiac sign. Saying "What sphere?" is poor roleplaying, but mostly because no one talks that way. Imagine someone walking up to you and saying "What sign?" in real life? You would probably just say "Huh?"
Saying something like "What star were your born under?" etc.. is perfectly fine.
