I think that he was just interseted in your clothes.
I grouped with fermat a bunch of times, and while I enjoyed his company, I found him mostly to be concerned with eq. On more than one occasion he would spew curses over gt after he died. I alos never knew he followed Gareth, which should have been apparent if he was such strong follower.
