Well, I have been thinking this same thing. For me Carrion Fields has been a completely love hate game. There are times I am completely and totally addicted, and foam at the mouth if I dont get my fix, then there are times where I could care less. A lot of what I am going to say may sound like a newbie bitching, but I assure you all I have been around for about three years or so.

When I first started the mud I didnt know shit from shampoo. I couldnt type, I didnt know the basic commands, and for a while an orcish sword seemed like the greatest thing in the world. At times I miss those days. I do agree somewhat that the item lists have helped me a lot, but I dont think they are as affective as people give them credit for. Sure they give you stats, but they still dont tell you where to get the item (I know they used to) so there is still the excitement of finding something new.

I think a great deal of the lack of fun at times hits when you realize that the innocence of being a newbie has faded a bit. There are times when you stop visualizing eastern road, or the market square, and all they become are a large collections of easts, or a place to meet a group. Not much can bring back the feeling of first looking around, back when we actually READ the descriptions of rooms in now overlooked areas.

It does seem that pking has become more rampant recently. Perhaps the desire to make a list on the CF homepage started it I dont know. When I began, sure you got killed, and often, but it was at relatively well spaced intervals. It was better to let a person live long enough to go get more stuff then kill them than to just wait for them to unghost then pop em again just for an added kill. It seemed that the battle between good and evil was more pure, less based on actual pk numbers, and more on roleplaying chivalrous knights and dastardly (I cant believe I used dastardly) villians. The ragers and the masters went back and forth constantly. I remember getting one of my first characters into Knights just based on roleplay, as I couldnt pk for shit. Now it seems we all almost have to be experts to enter masters, and battle now for that matter. It seems that CF has become less roleplay and more pk, less character depth and more kill ratio, less playable and more practice intensive.

What it all comes down to is the fact that we all either become elite players that completely rock in both pk ability and RP ability (Istendil) or we just become that random guy you rank with around leve 15 that knows stuff, but cant really get anywhere with his char (Me).

All this thrown into the pot with all the changes that have hit in the past year or so all add up to a big mess.

With all this said, and quite poorly said I will add, it is important to remember that this is the same world we all entered at some point completely clueless. It still has more mystery out there, more adventures await all of us. For some of us it just may seem less fun at times, and like life, it isnt always fun. But in the end, it is still OUR Thera, our reality away from reality.

A week attempt at being thoughtful,
Alex
