Damage statistics like 3d8 are from Dungeons and Dragons, the basis for just about all diku style mud code. In dungeons and dragons, you use special dice with different amounts of sides, there's 4 sided, 6 sided (what you normally see), 8 sided, 12 sided, 20 sided. You roll these dice to see the amount of damage a weapon does. In the case of 3d8, it means roll three 8 sided dice. The number of dice you roll is before the d and the type of die is stated after the d. What you should be most concerned with is the average damage, because that's how much damage you'll do with an average roll. All +dam roll is added after this initial roll, so get a weapon with a high average damage, then get lots of +dam roll equipment. Kentai
