> I must say, I did chuckle when I asked myself this question. Is it possible to defeat a nightgaunt? More rather, has anyone beaten it yet? From what it has seemed on the log board, everyone dies to it. Perhaps a little over kill here is the real answer? Who would ever think to make these nightgaunts so powerful? It seems to be beyond ridiculous.. No? I'm sure it's quite possible, and from some patented Nepenthian Vagueness (tm), there seem to be several ways out. But ask yourself, if you figured it out, would you post it? Or hold on to that knowledge so that your character is rewarded for cleverness and/or luck, while your enemies get slapped to death? What concerns me more is that one of the self-appointed "elite players" stumbles onto the answer, and now everyone who uses IRC/ICQ/playing from one big lab can all find out through OOC methods. A shame, but nothing can be done about it. I'd actually be sort of disappointed to see the weaknesses pointed out here, although I admit I'd probably take advantage. What I do have faith in is that the imms are aware of the situation. Some have even commented on it. Based on past experiences, with the possible exception of major airforms, I'd bet that either: 1) Nightgaunts are indeed overpowered, and will be toned down shortly, or Keep in mind that the imms have no incentive to upset game balance in the long term, conspiracy theories be damned. Two months from now, this whole thread will look silly. Of course, I'm not a member of the "elite players' club". =)
2) Nightgaunts are situationally powerful, like assassinate, Da Fiend, quicksand, summon/sleep, or the porcupine. All of these things are brutal if you are not prepared in some way for them. The difference is that "most people" know how to prepare for them, whereas it's safe to say "most people" get slaughtered by nightgaunts, at least for now.
