I personally find roleplaying uncabaled characters to be more rewarding, at least in most cases. After so many years of playing this game, I start to fall asleep just thinking about rolling up another dwarven rager, or gnome master, or what have you. However, I rarely advance past level 40, mostly because it becomes insanely hard to stay alive. I do pretty well up until the point where most characters have been inducted, but then the cabal powers start to take hold. How can a sword-spec warrior without a cabal compete against a transformed master offense major that has an even remotely similar level of skill? The answer: He can't. How does Transform aid a Master in roleplaying a studious wizard in search of the perfection of magic? It's just there to counteract deathblow.
I think a world where each cabal got some minor utility powers would be much better, both from a roleplaying and from a PKilling perspective. However, I think that the powers granted for exceptional roleplaying should far outweigh whatever you got when you joined your cabal.
