Some eq rots, but thats very very few stuff. Mostlikly...you cheeted and the imms know. So they rot and crumble your stuff. My friend, cheeted over and over with this one character. and everyday he would log in with out the stuff he just got the day before. He doesn't cheet now. Well...he doesn' really play now either...but still.
