First you get the soft leather from the Academy.

Second, head west to the Kobold Warrens and get two fine cloaks, white gloves, small cap, and fine belt.

Third, head east to Camelot and replace all of your soft leather with what's there. If you're feeling tough you can kill the elven mage in the Castle and wear his robe and necklace, allowing you to get better neckgear and headwear than the Kobold crap.

Fourth, walk to Seantryn Modan. Look for black steel stuff, a lot of it is beneficial for your hp.

Fifth, complete the travelling boot quest if you know it.

After you do that, and scrounge yourself up a halfway decent weapon you should be able to kill your way up the equipment ladder.
