I think a human could do alright with most weapons.
Don't pick whip for your first spec (with any race), and only a felar should pick staff/spear or polearm for a first spec (those are fine for second-specs, but you want to have one weapon that you can dual wield with when damage is necessary.)
Of course, a grain or two of salt is in order for all these tips, especially the one regarding staff/spear and polearm.
