Nothing in life is free. I'd be willing to bet the imms didn't even take notice of your thief. What most likely happened is you got your hands on some equipment that was either much to nice for someone of your rank, was gathered by you or by somebody else who cheated, or was looted from a pit all of which can lead to equipment crumbling. A rank 17 thief won't be missed, and neither will the whining.
