Getting gold as a lowbie is really quite easy if you know what to kill. Sure there are some chests around that hold gold, but most aren't accessible by lowbies. Here's a list of things to kill for gold.

-Merchants on Forest Road west of Galadon, the travelers also hold a fair amount of gold.
-Travelling merchants south of New Thalos.
-Theres a chest near the ranger's guild west of Galadon that holds a bit of gold, unlock it using the key in the fireplace.
-Nobles in Camelot hold a decent amount.
-William the troll in Mirkwood has a wallet with some cash in it.

Those are probably the five easiest ways to get gold. It's not a get rich quick scheme, but you won't be poor.
