To answer the original person's question: reading and writing common speech is entirely separate from readin and writing magical text. For example, you are taught to read and write in school, and you can read and write English. But can you read and write complex mathematics? Or computer code? They are "magical" or "arcane" languages that require special training.

Pen is just the ability to write down things in the common language. And do not malign warriors -- Samurai were required to be as accomplished at poetry as swordsmanship.
