First of, stay in the Academy as long as posible. Secondly, use the area command, and the maps you start with. Places like the kobold-caves and the goblin-village are good for you. You can also, once you advance a bit, try the lumberyard.
But.. My advice would be to get a group to show you around a bit, and for this there are two reasons.
1) It's much safer and easyer
2) You learn more in a group.
