An interesting idea I saw implemented on Pantheon was the separation of one's background and one's description. Sure, not everyone puts their character's background in his/her description, but it's enough of a problem to be addressed. Backgrounds, created and edited and removed as descriptions are, would be viewable only by Immortals for obvious reasons. Descriptions would stay as they are.
