Well:
if the thief cannot reach your head, you cannot
be blackjacked (think gnome vs giant: gee, what
can you do to make yourself larger?)

if you are a polearm spec warrior, there is something
they have which is a defense against most opening physical attacks

if you stay places thieves cannot hide, you will
(hopefully) see them before you get jacked.
