Sorry I'm late on this one...I'm kinda on vacation. Anyway, the advice listed in the other replies is sound, and you'd do well to heed it. Also, as for races/classes/etc...go with what you want (I'd suggest one of the basic classes...thief, warrior, assassin, possibly anti-paladin) And one of the lower exp races...ie: human, arial, etc.
Your first character will die, don't worry, it's okay...all of our first characters croaked more than normal. Use your first character as a test, find a niche, and enjoy yourself while you learn. I'll be the first to admit that CF isn't very newbie friendly...but if you stick with it just a bit, I personally think it's quite a bit of fun.
Also, if you're really stuck, and the helpfiles aren't helping, feel free to pray with a simple "HELP!"...and (assuming one of us is about) someone should offer some helpful advice. have fun.
