Hi Grummore, The problem with closing down the forum to keep CF stuff more secret, is that the "elite" groups of players will still have their shared information pathways. People who use ICQ, IRC, email, private web sites (DIKU), and the like would still have access to their big ol' list of tattoos, shrines, who-plays-who, cabal power updates, yadda yadda yadda. The net effect: Newer players, especially those (such as myself) who play -alone-, who know noone, who find things out the hard way, lose the ability to ask questions, discuss points, or just read some good fights. The existence of the forum is not the problem, it is the abuse of the forum. My solution: TIGHT policing of the forum. The VIP system is a start. Zero tolerance for those who break the rules. I'm not technically savvy enough to figure out how easy this is to do from an admin standpoint, but I know sites exist with this policy. If it's easy, I think the forum could stand to lose a few voices. If Dioxide simply closes his forum, all that will happen is that someone new will start one, and Dioxide at least seems to be a responsible, nice guy. Might as well leave it in his hands. The plus and minus to the forum (compared to ICQ/IRC/etc) is that whatever gets said, gets said out in the open. This is bad sometimes, like when The Evil One Whose Name Will Not Be Spoken begins a tirade against a great (former) IMM. But often this is good, because it gives accountability. The VIPs can tell who posted the nonsense, and call them out or otherwise take action. A little more of this type of thing, and I see the Forum only getting better over time. A naive solution would be to have logins. When you want to post to the forum (anyone can read), you email Dioxide for a handle and password. Now, you can only post under that name. You mess up, password revoked. No more posting for you. A solution for people with many, many possible email addresses is required, and ideas are welcome on this. This would also discourage flaming, as all of your comments will be linked to your one handle. Plus, flamers can simply have their posting ability revoked. Bam. Could this work? Is it a good idea? I don't know. I'm but a simple chemist. =) Any computer-literate folk care to comment? -Stahlhagen, the Doomed.
