In theory it would be lovely to just pick a role and then see what god suited it, but in the real world you'd like to at least have some inkling of a chance to get empowered and the availability of the immortals vary greatly. Therefore it would be sensible at least to keep in mind what gods to pick, before you decide what role to play. I'm not saying don't roleplay, but there are other factors that play in.
