Its not a common occurance, but it has happened (even though it was probably not for the better). I recall watching a battlerager of old, Remy I believe, using a vorpal weapon to defend the battle cabal from a certain buff Master, giving him the surprise of his life.
The sword only existed for a few ticks, as a quest reward, but he made good use of it, and its not likely to ever happen again.
