I've never played Ad&d so I don't know exactly what's entailed when playing an illusionist, but just from the name I'd have to assume that they're somewhat like bards. I've had many many ideas for a mage class on the order of a mind-alterer, but I always decide to scrap it because the likelihood of having a mage class that is really close to bards is unlikely.
