At low ranks run if your unsure, if your somewhat sure run anyway ... thats a tactic that kept me out of a single pk-loss until hero. Be flying in open spaces, and since you are a gnome reduce yourself to avoid bashing. Should allow time to recall... When you reach hero... I had around 1009 hp when I deleted with mediocre gear, died once to a rager my entire lifespan(due to bard sleep).
If you know all the wands you will have a good shoot at single ragers.
Just make sure you have plenty of healing items to brandish when you get low, or take a short break and heal up.
Basically ragers are a small problem for invokers(dying to them that is, somewhat mnore diffucult to kill due to their new powers), your main problem will probably be bloodthirsty people in Empire, unless you ally yourself with them(somewhat hard for a gnome, but if you have all 6 shields, they would prob see some use of your aid).
