Paladins are well known for carrying Holy Weapons, I definately think that this can be done, and still have it be different from Unholy Weapons. Here's my Idea on how to do it.
Paladins upon reaching 50th rank may begin thier quest for thier Holy Relic. Depending on the Religion, it would be a different type of item.
It would involve a god given quest, perhaps for the materials to make it, or something to prove thier worth, etc.
The Item would be Unique, with a unique name,
The Golden Longsword, Dalzob the night cleaver,
Zoryss the Shield of Fortitude, you get the idea.
It would be returned instantly to the character on thier death and be indestructible.
Examples.
Shokai
The Golden Longsword, Dalzob the Night Cleaver.
GLowing, Humming, Nodisarm, Nodrop.
MAterial Energy.
Level 55
Weight 1 lb 6 oz.
Attack: Searing Light
Avg Dm: 35
+ 10 dam + 10 hit
very rare Vorpal attack.

Bria
Enchanted Plate of the Rose
Glowing, Humming, Bless, Nodrop
Ac 75 75 75 75
+100 hp +100 mana
-25 for all saves
(Casts heal in combat)

Sedric
Shield of the Noble Protector
Glowing, Humming, Bless, Nodrop
Ac 50 50 50 50
+ 75 hp + 75 Mana
Deflects spells and communes(50 %)
Heals entire party in combat

You get the Idea, these may be abit powerfull, but Only those who had Roleplayed Excedingly well would ever get these, and it would take an exhaustive quest, and only hero Paladins with the third tier tattoo would have these.

Level 40 ability
Avatar- This Supplication would allow a paladin for a short time to become empowered with the essence of thier God. This can only be used once a week. It would last roughly 12 hours, after which no matter where the Paladin was they would fall into an exhaustive slumber for 12 hours.
If attacked while in this slumber it would be like the Paladin was affected by a hold person spell. It would grant the following Abilities.
Golden Sanc- 3/4 th damage reduction and immunity to Bash and Throw.
Double Hp's and Mana for duration.
+35 dam + 35 hit
Vulnerability to Defilement attacks.
If killed while in this form the Paladin looses a point of Constitution from the Shock.

These Abilities are designed so that Only well Roleplayed Paladin's recieve all of these abilities. This way a Hero Paladin, Imbued with the Power of Thier God will actually strike fear into Evil across Thera. I know what your thinking everyone will just role up Paladins just to kick ass, But if done properly it will be VERY DIFFUCULT to have a Hero Paladin with all the whistles and Bells. All Paladins who do not make the cut have the option to become shamans or Anti-Paladins at level 20-25.
