I wouldn't suggest a Druid if you're a newbie because they require empowerment. As mage classes go they all have their advantages and disadvantages, but I would also discourage you from choosing an Invoker unless you are willing to spend an ENORMOUS amount of time on your character. About choosing which race I'll have to agree with what Daryl B. says.
