Empowerment classes are tough for newbies, not just due to roleplay requirements and the like, but for basic game knowledge ect. I rarely play mage classes, but I have. And my advice would be this. For ease of leveling. For wanting to learn the mechanics and strategies behind spells. But I will agree with the other gentlemen who have responded. A good first mage is an AP...no empowerment, strong offense without spells. And relatively easy to rank. When it all boils down. Have fun. Plain and simple. If you want a druid, more power to ya. If you want ease, and to learn...hell do it anyway. The best way to learn is by trial and error. Well...I rambled...I wrote a lot, and said very little. AL
Transmuter: Almost all nonragers will want you around if only for haste/slow. Therefore you will be in much higher demand than invokers/necros/aps.
Someone else can speak on conjies. Though I would imagine that the early ranks are quite tough, and as a first mage it may be a bit too much for ya.
Invoker: Early on their spells seem a bit weak...but in reality they are fine. At higher ranks invokers can do terrible things to non-ragers. Invokers take time, patience, and strategy. But can be extremely fun.
Druids are a nice class...but I would warn any newbie about them. From what I have seen it seems that most of their powers are based on strategy and knowledge of game mechanics.
