Gear means something at the lower ranks because of how limited you are in what you can do in combat. You've got your kick, feint, bash, trip, lower assassin kicks, weak spells and so forth. Once you get to the higher ranks gear means less because of the wide range of things you have at your disposal. Mages DEFINITELY don't need any gear to kill the fodder and neither do priests or fighters. Of course, going up against somebody with brains without gear probably isn't wise, but it's not a guaranteed death for you.

Newbies need gear, heroes don't.
