There can be any number of reasons why those in different sects are at odds with each other. Immortals do not encourage it really, but they are rather hands off about most things, allowing Imperial leaders to dictate policy. It not like Imperials walk around attacking those from other sects constantly, but there is a certain greed factor involved in being an Imperial. If you want to share clothing and prance about with a song on your lips, I do not suggest playing a Citizen. As for becoming anathema, it's quite difficult if you have been taught properly by those within your sect. You must know how to act, and must know the rules to the letter, but that is all.
