In all the names that interested me from my guide to baby names, I have never once encountered one that is already in use. The great thing about a baby name book is that you have a little history and meaning, as long as you don't use a name that says it's from a famous myth or from a saint. If you use a book with a lot of names, especially from different cultures, you'll have a hard time running out of names.

A phone book is a good idea, too.

And I always look a name up in an online dictionary and encyclopedia before using it.
