There is something in the White Wolf game system which could apply here.

Each character has a:

Nature (Sphere) Which would be the actual sphere your character follows.

Demeanor: Which be the sphere your character appears to be to other people.

For example (not accurate, just example) , Nepenthe could have sought Power over all things (hence joining masters without truly believing in their rules and such), but appeared outwardly to be Dedicated, or Honest.

Nepenthe
Sphere: Power
Demeanor: Dedication
