Well, I think every skill has it's uses, although some may have trouble justifying some lesser-powered redundant skills like doublethrust, cross, etc.
I tend to practice everything, but I only put one practice into skills/spells that my life doesn't depend on... detect invis, infravision, detect hidden, etc. These go up pretty fast from 37%, and the extra practices add up later if I can skimp on 5-10 skills.
Whoever said lore was worthless has obviously never bothered to learn it. Anytime I have a char I intend to seriously play, I spend time spamming lore when I just have excess mana lying around. Usually I get about 92% lore by the time I hit 40, which is very helpful for us solo-types that don't trust anybody that can ID.
Oh, if you are a ranger/necro, there can be advantages to not practicing butcher/embalm... which is a bonus if you like getting away with killing in town.
