dont die.... just follow my lead :)
you should be able to gain conver if you get a decent roll (unless you plan on being a class with too many things to learn)..
as a giant you get some big bonuses such as strength, hps and weapon resist... so hopefully you shouldnt die as often as a gnome...
however this seems to go at higher ranks... especially for those giants with vulnerabilities.. need I say more
