The Princess Bride by: W.Goldman Great book, great movie, take a look at them both if you haven't. I really liked the "man in black" Character and sort of adopted a couple of traits for Tathlyn, added that with a splash or two of the Jiacomo from an old Danny Kay movie called "The court Jester".
If you'd like to see some interesting means of character advancement and development, I'd strongly suggest "the ColdFire Trillogy" by C.S.Friedman, in these books alignment plays a huge role in the characters, but as they travel together, friedman shows how the edges of thier beliefs start to get a bit less sharp, and predefined roles start to waver. Mix that in with an original plot, and some exceptional writing, and you have yourself a book that'll take hold of you and won't let you put it down.
hrmn seem to be rambling a bit so..
