As suggested, I think the very best way to roleplay is to start out with a relatively well thought out character. I know some people like to start and see where things go and that certainly has its merits and you do need to be flexible with your character, but it does help to have an idea of where you're going, what you're doing and who you are in general. If you're shy or bold, smart or stupid, outgoing or an introvert, flirtatious or all business. It also helps me to have what I call 'quirks'. Everyone in real life has them. You know, some people blink a lot and some people twirl their hair and some people smoke and some drink. This helps to give you a tiny bit of defining to your character that wouldn't be there otherwise. These are just a few suggestions. Also, I concur with the one who wrote below..read, read and read. Even if you steal an idea from this character and that one to make your character who he is, it's still somewhat original. Hope this helps. I know I tend to ramble so I'll stop here.
