I'd pick an assassin over a thief 'cause they can fight better. You can practice lore up to 100% easily enough, and you get things like vanish which is a lifesaver if you're being tracked by a particularly nasty mob.

Not to mention blindness dust, caltraps, and other utility type skills that can make killing a mob for his gear all that much easier.
