Banning it here would just mean that people will exhaust other channels trying to round up that information.

There are plenty of times where it is useful to take things to email. I use my qhcf.net account to coordinate the FAQ (*), help with managing the Forum, and communicating with IMMs and players about bugs, Forum issues, and feedback on past characters.

I don't hand out who I'm playing. I don't ask for information that I couldn't ask about here. And I certainly don't find groups that way.

Now, once you acknowledge that email can be useful, it's pointless to ban the posting of information about ICQ and such. If people want to use it to "cheat", they are going to. If we made a rule saying "No posting ICQ numbers", people would find them out via email.

I agree with the other posters- I don't doubt that a lot of people use IRC/ICQ to try to get an unfair advantage via scouting, leaking info, forming OOC alliances, etc. But banning isn't going to solve that.

Buckle up, fight the good fight, and don't worry about the schmucks who cannot or will not play without cheating.
