I had a drow shaman, and they are suprisingly strong. True, you could harp all day on their penalties, but look at what they get to counteract them... sanct, protection, protective shield. Even with vuln mithril, they can stand up to quite a beating.

I agree with Imbrogno's post that they need to play more like mages, though. Go all +hp and -save gear, and eat stoneskin pills like they were candy, and you'd have little to fear. If you were looking for a pk'er, you might do a tad better as a duergar or human, just because of the more combat advantages, but as far as RP, few religions are better defined or more diabolically-fun than drow.
