What determines how experience is distributed to group members? (little text):

Obviously, there are small things that take affect such as goods killing evils bonuses... but other than that? I've seen low rank people group with high and get very little experience. Then again, I've done the same as a low level & gotten lots of exp.
Is it determined by how much damage is done and then factors in rank?
