Robert Jordan isn't bad with his Wheel of Times series. A bit formulaic and long, but a good read (and still going...the next -7th or 8th? book in the series comes out next month.)
R.A. Salvatore has some good basic fantasy stuff...The dark elf series is good, and the Demon series isn't bad...I can see a lot of CF 'Similarities', or where one could come up with some good rp based on some of this stuff.
