There are many things here. Agorinth was prepared and waiting, giving him the advantage there. He is a leader of a cabal and therefore has some dang nice armor and weapons of his own AND possibly special skills and/or improvments to his current skills/spells(communes). The dirt and tripping may be from and item or his stature as a leader. My thoughts.
