What you end up with is stagnation. You have
to change things to keep them interesting.
This is partly why Master and Sylvan now oppose
each other because it adds a little spice to
the ongoing fight between Battle and Master,
and to the mud on the whole.

While the one-on-one confrontations make things
easier they make them much less interesting.

Also, character switching is NOT a new phenomena.
Even when the cabal wars were more straight forward
this was still going on.
