If you the kind of player that likes being
defensive (like I am), then you have to go
fire giant.

Otherwise maybe duergar, so you can see that
hidden world around you.

The big advantage of the giant is that you
can sometimes take on gang bangs. With the
duergar you can stay on the offense better
because no one will be sneaking up on you.

I wouldn't recommend the other races. An
assassin (which seems to be one of the best
mage killers around) does all the same things
it does to other mages against you, in addition
to you having less protection against the
other warrior classes.
