As far as fighting lions/tigers/etc for sport, it was learned that it is very hard to get one to 'fight' back. Most of them will slink away, especially if wounded. Bored Knights manning crusader supply routes in Spain found this out. They tried everything they could get into the arena...lions, tigers, bears (oh my), but none would provide the sport they craved. The only animal they found that would fight "to the death" was the Bull...
