Need help with wands and staves

Need help with wands and staves:

OK what are wands and staves good for. I personaly have
not messed with wands. I have not a clue what staves is.
Is there much use for them besides using wands and other
related item. I read a forum earlier that says u can gain spells
or something by studying items is this true. Anyway any help
would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.
